One doll, displayed properly, looks more expensive than a crowded cabinet. The discipline is the same as hanging a single painting.
Give it air
Leave at least a hand's width on either side. Negative space is what separates a display from storage - more ideas in display ideas and backdrops.
Set the eyeline
The face should sit slightly below your standing eyeline, or at seated height if the shelf is in a living room. Looking down at a sculpted face flattens it.
Choose the light deliberately
Indirect daylight from the side is best; direct sun fades fibre and paint. Never place a piece in front of a window - see protecting dolls from sun, dust and humidity.
Backdrop over shelf
A plain matte wall, a linen panel or a shallow shadow box. Busy wallpaper competes with the work; the styling logic is set out in styling art dolls in adult decor.
Two or three supporting objects, maximum
A book, a small vase, a single dried stem. Anything more turns the doll into part of a scene rather than the subject.
Secure and rotate
Use a museum putty or a low stand so the piece cannot topple, and rest it out of light for a few weeks each year - long-term protection is in storing and travelling with art dolls.
One-shelf checklist
- Air on both sides, nothing touching the doll.
- Face at or just below eye level.
- Indirect, side-lit, no direct sun.
- Matte, plain backdrop.
- At most three supporting objects.
