Doll Outfits and Removable Accessories: A Collector's Guide

Removable outfits turn one doll into many, but they also introduce fit, wear and storage problems. A little care keeps a wardrobe usable for decades.

Scale is everything

A garment made for one size rarely fits another. Match it using scales and proportions before you buy, and measure the doll rather than trusting a label.

Fibres and construction

Natural fabrics and hand-finished seams drape and last better than stiff synthetics. Check that fastenings are small and secure. The same material logic as the doll itself applies - see materials explained.

Shoes, wigs and props

Shoes must not distort the foot; wigs should sit without adhesive where possible - hair options are covered in doll wig materials. Store props separately so they cannot scratch the body.

Dressing without damage

  • Support the joints; never force a sleeve over a fragile arm.
  • Keep metal fastenings away from painted surfaces.
  • Rotate outfits rather than leaving one in place permanently.

Storing a wardrobe

Acid-free tissue, flat storage and away from damp. Full storage and travel advice is in storage and travel.

Buying outfits online

Ask for a photo of the outfit on the actual doll size, and confirm what is included. A good seller states fibre, scale and minor flaws plainly.
