Teddy bear listings quote sizes in centimetres, inches, or both - and a "40 cm bear" can feel very different depending on whether that measurement is taken standing or sitting. Here is how to read a size and choose the right one.
The standard bands
- Miniature - under 10 cm. Display pieces, often fully jointed. Easy to collect in groups.
- Small - 10 to 20 cm. Sits on a desk or shelf; the most popular gift size.
- Medium - 20 to 45 cm. The classic collector size. Good detail, still easy to display.
- Large - 45 to 90 cm. A statement piece; needs its own chair or shelf.
- Life-size - over 90 cm up to 2 m. Rare, made to order, and usually the centre of a collection.
Standing or sitting?
Always check which measurement the maker used. A bear that stands 40 cm may sit at 30 cm. When a listing gives one number only, assume standing height unless stated.
Match the size to the job
For a shelf display, small and medium sizes let you build a scene without crowding. For a child's gift, medium is the sweet spot - large enough to hug, small enough to carry. For a collector's centrepiece, go large. See the range of sizes in our new arrivals.
Weight matters too
Quality bears are weighted with glass or steel granules so they sit and stand properly. A 30 cm bear that weighs almost nothing will slump. Weight is usually listed for collector pieces - if it is missing, ask. Our mohair buying guide explains what to look for.
Scale with other dolls
If you display bears alongside art dolls, check the scale - see doll scales explained so everything reads as one scene.
