Presenting a Handmade Doll: Wrapping, Cards and the Unboxing

Half the pleasure of a handmade gift is the moment it is opened. A little preparation makes that moment match the work inside.

Wrap the piece, not the doll

Never wrap the doll directly against tape or paper. Put it in a soft cloth bag or acid-free tissue, then in its box, then wrap the box. Storage practice carries over directly - see storing and travelling with art dolls.

Protect the face and limbs first

Facial detail and delicate limbs are the first casualties of careless wrapping. Padding is not decoration, it is insurance; the shipping logic is in packing a doll safely.

Write the card by hand

Say what the piece is, who made it and why you chose it. A short paragraph about the maker turns an object into a story, and the artist's own words are often best - see what to ask an artist.

Make the reveal deliberate

Layers work: outer wrap, box, tissue, tie. A minute of unwrapping feels considered; three seconds feels like a parcel.

Keep the paperwork together

Artist card, care note and any certificate belong in the box, not the bin - certificates matter for value, explained in whether OOAK dolls hold value.

A simple presentation checklist

  • Soft bag or tissue around the piece.
  • Rigid box with padded interior.
  • Handwritten card naming the artist.
  • Care instructions enclosed.
  • Two or three layers of wrap, maximum - keep it elegant, not bulky.

Choosing the piece itself is covered in matching a doll to the recipient.
