Doll Wig Materials Explained: Mohair, Alpaca, Wool and Synthetic

The hair is often the most expensive single element of a doll, and the most fragile. Knowing the four common fibres tells you how to buy and how to care.

Mohair

From the Angora goat, mohair has a soft natural halo and takes dye beautifully. It holds a set but should be handled gently. Care matches the body fibre - see mohair care.

Alpaca and other fine wools

Alpaca is smoother and slightly heavier than mohair, giving a flatter, more controlled drape. Merino and other fine wools sit in the same family. All are natural, non-shiny and take gentle steam.

Synthetic hair

Cheaper and more uniform, but it catches light with a plastic sheen and can frizz with heat. It holds a curl only with low heat and often a fixative.

Which to choose

  • Heirloom display piece, natural look: mohair.
  • Sleek, controlled styling: alpaca or fine wool.
  • Budget or a child's doll: synthetic, treated as disposable.

Match the fibre to the rest of the build using the materials guide.

Care reminders

Never brush wet. Use a soft brush, work from the ends up, and store away from direct sun; display and light are covered in displaying your collection.
